John Poff

Born in Chillicothe, Ohio. Moved with family to Findlay in 1958. Father Glen E. Poff, was director of the Findlay YMCA from 1958 through 1972. Mother Mary Ellen taught American history at Findlay High School until passing away suddenly in 1968. John played baseball and basketball at FHS. In 1970, Poff helped carry the team to the semifinal game in the state high school baseball championship in Class AA, the division for larger schools. Poff was voted team MVP that year and hit safely in every single game during the season.

After graduating from Duke University in 1974, Poff made it to the majors for 31 games in 1979 and 1980. He hit .218 in 91 plate appearances. The first baseman-outfielder retired after the winter of 1981-82. He played for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Milwaukee Brewers.

After retiring from baseball he became a school teacher and writer.
