Member of Andrews’ Raiders who infiltrated several hundred miles behind Confederate lines and stole a train engine named “The General” and raced 7 hours back toward Chattanooga. 20 miles shy of freedom they had to abandon the engine and flee for their lives. Most were captured within days. The raid is also known as Mitchell’s Raid for the Union general who approved the operation. Member of the 21st Ohio OVI. Executed as a spy on June 18, 1862 Awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor Buried in Chattanooga National Cemetery in Tennessee.
