William Wallace Campbell

A pioneer of astronomical spectroscopy (the study of the interaction between matter and radiated energy) that helped confirm Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity. He also served as director of Lick Observatory, the world’s first permanently occupied mountain-top observatory, and President of the University of California. Campbell was born on a farm in Cass Township, just east of Van Buren.
